SUTTON DRIVERS WALMER, THOMPSON COME HOME 2-3
AT
ROSEVILLE
SACRAMENTO,
CALIFORNIA (May 20, 2010) – 14 year-old Keegan Walmer and 16 year-old Cody Thompson finished
second and third respectively in Saturday night’s USAC Western
Pavement Ford Focus Series race at All American Speedway in
Roseville, Calif.
The young drivers
race out of the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle stable based in
Sacramento. Walmer is a second-year driver in the program while
Thompson, a graduate of the 600 Micro Sprints, is in his
first-season in the driver development program.
Both drivers had
impressive performances one the one-third mile asphalt oval, but for
different reasons.
Walmer, out of
Portland, Oregon
driving for Reser’s Foods, qualified fifth fastest on the night out
of 13 entrants with a time of 13.928.
He followed that
up with a third place finish in his eight lap heat race.
In the main
event, Walmer went toe-to-toe with USAC NorCal points leader, 24
year-old Garett Peterson. Walmer led the first five laps until the
yellow came out. On the ensuing restart he lost the lead but that
did not mean the race was over.
Walmer ran in
stride with Peterson through lapped traffic from the remaining laps
in the 35 lap race, and made several attempts to take the lead.
At the finish,
Peterson came out ahead of Walmer by just two-tenths of a second.
For Fremont’s
Cody Thompson, he showed his ability to race on the high side that
he undoubtedly gained from years racing on the dirt.
Thompson
qualified seventh and started seventh in the 35 lap main. After the
lap five caution, Thompson began his bold run on the top of the race
track. 15 laps later, Thompson finally moved back to the bottom of
the race track after assuming the third position.
Over the final
laps, Thompson began to reel in the more experienced Walmer for
second place but ran out of time at the finish.
The finishes
moved Walmer into third in the USAC NorCal points standings with
Thompson now ranked fifth, just one point behind his teammate and
fellow rookie Bobby Runyan.
“I cannot be more
proud of these two drivers,” said Driver Development Coach Ron
Sutton. “Keegan and Cody both raced like veterans on Saturday and
showed the Roseville fans what this team is all about!”
The next race for
the USAC NorCal Ford Focus s scheduled for June 19 at Stockton 99
Speedway.
